Category Name : Sports, Hobbies & Games
Author Name : Every Hand Revealed
Publisher Name : I feel like a party-pooper giving this a 4-star rating, given that everyone else has seen fit to lavish it with the full quota. There's no doubt that "Every Hand Revealed" is a very good poker book, written by one of the game's most interesting characters. And, given that it's essentially a fairly dry blow-by-blow (well, hand-by-hand) self-penned account of Gus's 2007 Aussie Millions win, it is surprisingly engaging. Gus takes us through his thought patterns and explains how - and why - his approach to the game changes at different points. This is, perhaps, the book's most interesting angle, concentrating as much on the psychology as the mathematics. So why just 4 stars instead of 5? Well, as I said, this is essentially just a record of a poker tournament and, as you'd expect, many of the hands detailed aren't actually all that interesting to read about, consisting of pre-flop/post-flop bets and instant folds. Gus highlights why post-flop aggression and continuation betting is so important, but reading about it isn't always much fun. Fortunately, his engaging style does manage to pull you through, and it's certainly a valuable read for anyone serious about improving their game. I think it could have been improved by including some wider first-hand thoughts about the tournament itself, with maybe an anecdote or two as humourous interludes, rather than merely a run-down of hand histories. Maybe that would deviate too much from the book's primary purpose, but I feel it would have improved the readability. Incidentally, this book must surely hold the world record for the most usages of the word "discombobulated"... I wonder if there was a little prop bet going on there?!
