Facebook Home will be available for Android users from April 12
Facebook Home debuted along side HTC First, the smartphone aptly named, as it hosts the first overlay from the social networking firm. HTC has earlier collaborated with Facebook to bring devices with similar ideology, but they were not a big hit among the public. Zuckerberg has called the new Facebook home overlay an attempt to put people first and not apps.
The new offering from Facebook displays photos and content from your home page onto the screen. A constant stream of images and captions run through the home and lock screens, courtesy to Cover Feed. A profile image of the users acts as a guide to the workings of HTC First. The display is similar to some lock screens present in the market. For people wondering what actually is Facebook Home, it is a home screen or theme embedded with the photos and content from the user’s homepage.
The profile picture shows the way to the app launcher on the top, messenger on the left, and the last app, which the user used to the right. Status updates are shown along with image captions while Facebook uses it developer’s talents in showing the most interesting/liked/commented-on images. The application will be available from April 12 for download on Android smartphones.
Talking about the idea behind Facebook phone overlay, Zuckerberg said, “For the past 30 years or so, computing has revolved around applications.” You would turn on your computer, open the application you need to use, and then close it when you’re finished. What would it feel like if our phones were designed around people rather than around applications.”
On choosing Google over Apple for Facebook Home, Zuckerberg stated, “Google is aware of what we’re doing, we’ve talked with them about this, but fundamentally Android is just a more open system, so we don’t have to work directly with them in order to build an experience like this or even go deeper than what we’re talking about today. They’ve designed Android from the ground up to support deep integration like this.”
